The Secret Pane of Pain was a minigame started by Grian in Season 9, that was fusion of Hot Potato and the light gray stained glass pane prank that EthosLab's Shade-E-E's shop did in Season 7. The idea of the game was to throw a Secret Pane of Pain (named light gray stained glass pane) into other Hermits' inventory without them noticing. This item looks like the empty slot, because it blends into the background, so it's hard to see it in their inventory.
Grian came up with the idea for Secret Pane of Pain while talking with iJevin. The Panes were prepared while Grian waited for GoodTimesWithScar to build the Giant Bonsai Cherry Blossom Tree together. Before they started, Grian managed to discreetly pass one Secret Pane of Pain into GoodTimesWithScar's inventory and start his minigame.[2] However, it was never continued. It is not known if GoodTimesWithScar ever noticed the Secret Pane of Pain, or what happened to the item. Grian also probably never gave another pane to anyone, even though he had more of it.[3]

Secret Pane of Pain was a light gray stained glass pane item, renamed and with minigame rules written in lore (option possible because of a data pack used on Season 9). The item icon is mostly flat and with light gray texture (mostly translucent) in a tone almost identical to the background of slots in inventory. Because of that, to the human eye, a slot containing one (so there is no number) light gray stained glass pane looks empty.
Grian prepared at least 36 Secret Panes of Pain (he also had one without the lore),[3] but only one was used in the game.
Game goal[]
The goal for the person who has the Secret Pane of Pain is to pass it on to any other Hermit. The item must end up in their inventory, without them noticing. After a successful try, the new owner must keep the Secret Pane of Pain in inventory (if they find it[5]) until they pass it on to the next person.[4][6]
Difficulties[]
Certain factors can make it much more difficult, risky or even impossible to pass the Secret Pane of Pain discreetly:
- Full inventory - there is no way to put any items to an inventory when its full. It is not always possible to check this before trying.
- Empty slots in hot bar - items entering the inventory always go to the hot bar first, if there is a free slot. This would make it much easier to notice the Secret Pane of Pain, because the hot bar is always visible for the player and it's displayed with transparent background.
- Resource packs - some resource packs might change the appearance of inventory or stained glass panes and make it easier to notice. During the game's short activity ImpulseSV, Rendog, xBCrafted and Xisumavoid were using a resource pack with a much darker inventory background.
