N.A.R[1] (acronym expansion: Not A Resistance[2]) was a one-person club made by Grian in Season 9 during King RenTheKing's Reign. Creation of the N.A.R was a way of communicating that Grian would not start a resistance, however he still took some steps against the RentheKing. The club was never mentioned again after the end of the reign.

History[]

Establishment[]

NAR Rock

After Rendog became king, Grian announced that, contrary to expectations, he would not form a resistance.[3] To clarify his position on the issue, he founded a club that he wanted to reveal with sculk. To this end, he built a wall with hidden club name, in one of Dwayne's flying rocks (which became the club house from that moment). The idea was to reveal an inscription, possibly made of stone slabs, with a spreading sculk that was intended to cover the entire wall except for the letters.

Not A Resistance

Grian tried to accomplish this by killing himself three times at the catalysts and then building a temporary mob farm. However, the sculk spread uncontrollably across the whole rock, so he had to show the last letter by hand, revealing the club name "N.A.R.". After that, he could make it clear that he was determined not to resist the king and instead to remain a neutral, good citizen.[4]

Attempts to avoid resisting[]

Despite his position, Grian was not a supporter of the King and was ready to take any action other than resisting. His first step was to use Server Quests for his benefit and entertainment. Grian created his own Priority Quests, paying for them with diamonds from the King's Statue.[5] This caused RentheKing to ban quests that were not made by him.[6]

The club house rock also had use in reminding Grian not to resist. When the King announced all stores were owned by the Crown, Grian made his way to the N.A.R wall and kept repeating "Don't start a resistance" until he calmed down. However, he was still determined to stop the King from claiming the shops, and since he couldn't do it himself, he decided to convince other Hermits to take care of it. For this, he created Priority Adventure (bypassing the quest ban) to lure someone to use Grumbot's Content Generator and get words: "Remove", "King" and "Claim"[7] from it. The Hermit who accepted this content was ImpulseSV, but due to misunderstanding, he assumed that his task was to remove the King's claims not to the shops, but to the throne. This resulted in the involvement of the Soup Group in the resistance movement against the crown.[8]

The second time he visited the rock to calm down was when the Royal Emeralds were introduced. That time it wasn't enough, so he asked GoodTimesWithScar for help. This ended with Grian's death, but it helped with keeping him from starting a resistance.[9]

Resistance Assistance[]

GRACS

The king's further actions made it harder and harder for Grian not to resist. More laws came in and he was losing profits from his store through the Royal Emeralds. This led Grian to exploit a loophole and set up a service GRACS, that would allow him to participate in the Resistance if he was hired to do so. He received his first commission from the Soup Group shortly after opening the shop,[10] and as he forgot to close the service after that, the King himself hired him some time later, to "Resist the resistance".[11]

Vault Assault[]

Grian participated in the event both as a participant, fighting to overthrow the King and reclaim the diamonds, but also (when the time has come) as one of the vault defenders. It was RentheKing's commission for him to build the last room that would leave no hope and no victory. However, it was not specified who's victory, so Grian decided to support the participants. He made his room easy to pass and left a reward in the form of the diamond armor and swords. This made it possible to finally defeat the King and end his reign.[12]

Trivia[]

  • The expectations for Grian to create a resistance movement they came from the fact that he started the Mycelium Resistance in Season 7. By founding N.A.R he reversed these expectations.
  • N.A.R test

Grian, upset that the club's reveal didn't go as planned, added timelapse from his test world, to show how N.A.R revealing should look like.[1]
  • Although the N.A.R is called a club, no one has ever become a member except Grian. GoodTimesWithScar was once asked if he wanted to join, but he probably didn't even hear the question.[4]
