JoeHills, known for short as Joe, joined Hermitcraft in May 2012 in the fifth week of Season 1 and is currently active. He is one of five people who have been involved in Hermitcraft since Season 1, the others being BdoubleO100, Hypnotizd, Keralis, and XisumaVoid. He has 136,000 subscribers on his channel, JoeHillsTSD .[2]JoeHills joined YouTube on June 26, 2011, and started uploading Minecraft Super Hostile Series before being invited to Hermitcraft.
Season 1
JoeHills was one of the first people recruited by the server after the beginning. His spawn house was a structure initially built by Generikb, next to his own house. Throughout the duration of the early parts of the season, JoeHills gradually replaced the blocks of the house, eventually creating a different house but with the same shape. His nether portal led to a bunch of netherrack spires and a path that led away from his base. His actual base was accessed through walking through dense foliage. The base itself was a combination of builds including a redstone lab built into the side of a hill which was filled with various small and useless contraptions, a boat-house that JoeHills still uses as his YouTube banner to this day, a Vechs Super Hostile-esque monument to celebrate his progress in Generikb's trials, a cake on a boat to celebrate his new computer, and a series of miniature versions of British landmarks and tropes, for a mini-series which he referred to as "Transatlantic Tea-Time"

Episode 2 did not air until June 2012 due to an issue with the server causing two server resets in April 2012.

Season 2
JoeHills was present for the beginning of Season 2, and claimed a few plots in Old Hermiton. He initially worked with ZombieCleo to build her house, a replica of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Shortly after this, they began work on a conceptual build, quite literally a series of floating discs with gardens in. His actual base was located in Old Hermiton, and was a small base carved into a hill. He had also created a series of builds surrounding it, including a replica of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus which served as a monument to Biffa2001's Season 1 base, a museum built out of end stone which housed retro video game eyes built out of various materials, and a sheep farm made out of wool, which had a lego inspired house on top. On top of these, he also built a recreation of the Ministry of Truth from the novel 1984, which was built out of glass. He moved to New Hermiton after the 1.7 update, and built a stone and lime glass UFO near ZombieCleo's towers, which had a potato farm inside. JoeHills was quite inactive during this season owing to his daughter being born towards the end of Season 1, but he was still fairly active in the community, participating in the Abba Caving Tournament and several UHCs.

Season 3
JoeHills reappeared shortly after the beginning of Season 3, and settled in Hermit Hills next to FalseSymmetry, where he worked on re-creatng the bar from the television show Cheers, however, this project was never finished, as he had temporarily gone inactive to take care of his family. Despite this, he returned close to the end of the season to build his base, which was located at the northern world border and was accessed through a nether tunnel marked "To Joe Hills and the Northern Frontier."
JoeHills only uploaded 6 Hermitcraft Season 3 videos: Episode 1, October 19, 2014 - Episode 6, February 21, 2016. Joe titled these videos either Hermitcraft Amplified, or Hermitcraft (2016). It is speculated that Joe took some time off from uploading in 2015 because of his daughter, Corrinne, being only 2 years old at the time. Instead of Hermitcraft Season 3 videos, Joe uploaded 17 Hermitcraft FTB Infinity videos in early 2015. Joe uploaded 2 Modsauce videos and 1 Hermitcraft Season 3 video for the remainder of 2015.
Season 4
JoeHills returned from his Season 3 hiatus for the beginning of Season 4. He initially got lost from the rest of the Hermits, and found his way to what became the shopping district, and built a small wooden starter house. Upon realising his mistake, he renovated the build into Maslow's Hierarchy of Steak, an early food shop comically named after Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. He later moved to the residential area, where he set up an adobe house next to ZombieCleo, connecting to an underground horse stable and a series of tunnels designed to link the top of the mesa with the lower areas. To signify the location of his residence, he created a blue @ block on top of a nearby hoodoo to the mesa. His main base was a recreation of the farmhouse from the movie Field of Dreams, an area which he called his 'Greatest Plaines.' He connected his base to Welsknight's area, through a path called the "Iowa Trail," a reference to both the Oregon Trail and the fact that Iowa was the setting for Field of Dreams. He created several landmarks along this trail, including the site for a pioneer fort and a recreation of the Terracotta Warriors with observers and glazed terracotta.

Early in the season, JoeHills set up his base on the land surrounding a body of water he called "Red Sky Bay". Joe then created his first large build, a colorful 3 story building with a sign that read "Red Sky Bay" on the outside of each floor.
Season 6
JoeHills never had a base, he was a self-proclaimed nomad. Some prominent builds from him were the Ministry of Truth, and many more.

Base

JoeHills has a base on the Strait of Joebraltar, which he named after himself. There, he built his starter base in a sunken ship, then built a winery nearby inspired by the Wizards of Wine from Chris Perkins' Curse of Strahd module for Dungeons & Dragons. For this, he collected thousands of berries and terraformed land to add a vineyard around the winery. Following the 1.16 Nether Update, he replaced the Winery's original building materials with polished blackstone and warped wood variants. The base, especially the Winery, is within viewing distance of Mount GOATmore, Docm77 and BdoubleO100's starter bases, and the stables building at BdoubleO100's permanent base.
JoeHills built a lighthouse that is a 1:1 model of the Tower of Hercules in Galicia, Spain, on a terraformed hill across the Strait of Joebraltar from the Winery. He added a nether-themed mirror-image of the lighthouse underneath it, built with basalt and surrounded by lava. Underneath the Strait of Joebraltar, he excavated and terraformed a large ravine-like cavern surrounding three spawner-based mob farms. On a small peninsula, he built a nether portal in the shape of his "@" logo and a skylight looking down into the cavern.
In JoeHills' Season 7 Episode 66, he acquired the deed for xBCrafted's base from the HCBBS, while xBCrafted acquired the deed to JoeHills' base. JoeHills built an automatic sorting system, modeled after the one at TinFoilChef's base, inside the floating island. At an area where xBCrafted had intended to build a seaport, JoeHills built sculptures of VGA and PS/2 computer ports. He then developed the concept into a corporate campus for a technology corporation, building an office building shaped like a giant set of floppy disks.
In JoeHills' Season 7: Episode 72, he and xBCrafted switched bases back so Joe could build a model of the Ever Given, the ship that was stuck in the Suez Canal at the time, stuck at the Strait of Joebraltar. Joehills, ZombieCleo, XisumaVoid, and Rendog built a 2:5 scale replica of the Ever Given wedged into the Strait of Joebraltar during the second Hermits help Hermits livestream on Monday, March 29, 2021. JoeHills and ZombieCleo dubbed it "Joseph's Amazing Technicolor Dreamboat," a reference to the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Swearing off Diamonds
Following a failed attempt at claiming iJevin's head for ZombieCleo's Head Games which resulted in him dying in TangoTek's iron farm and losing diamond blocks, JoeHills swore off diamonds for the rest of the season, promising to cover all diamonds that come into his possession in lava. Because netherite does not burn in lava, he considers it acceptable for use, and he obtained a netherite pickaxe from VintageBeef by bartering the land from the Folks at Work shop. He then obtained a netherite axe from EthosLab in exchange for clearing jungle trees from the Netherlands Gaming district, and netherite leggings from ZombieCleo in exchange for six million armor stands.
Shopping District
JoeHills laid out the Shopping District's first roads using cobblestone, charging 30 diamonds each for permits to modify them. He also bought the land surrounding the Nether portal, which he used to sell portal customization permits for 50 diamonds. The permits were sold at the Folks at Work shop, next to a stand selling cooked steak called Steak a Break - Bust a Moo.
During The Mayor Election, JoeHills ran for "Dogcatcher," a role he invented in protest after Grian created the mayor role, with which he would clean up stray dogs around the server and "watch over the diamond pile in the shopping district." The role is actually intended to give him authority to use lava to cover the pile of diamonds that had been collecting during the season as payment for land. To run his campaign, Joe created a poster map and bred a large quantity of dogs which he sat around the shopping district and multiple other Hermits' bases, dyeing their collars white to make them appear untamed. He began building a dog sanctuary, containing doghouses, giant bones, and a beach next to the lighthouse, naming it Joerassic Bark (a portmanteau of Jurassic Park, Joe, and Bark). He won the vote almost unanimously, besides ZombieCleo writing in "Daffy Duck." Since winning the election, Joe has begun moving the dogs he placed around the server into Joerassic Bark.
Hermit Zoo and ZombieCleo's Base
JoeHills is currently collaborating with ZombieCleo to build a Hermit Zoo near her base, which will contain an exhibit for each Hermit as if they were animals in a zoo display. Joe's own exhibit contains a model for a silhouette overlay in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which can be seen in use during the "MST3Keralis" segment of his Episode 31: "Books from Keralis? Hermit Zoo with Cleo!" After ZombieCleo gave him a pair of netherite leggings in exchange for six million armor stands, he began manufacturing armor stands using increasingly intrusive farms set up inside her base. This culminated in a cactus farm coming through the top of the base and into the sky, which he decorated as half of a large rainbow. ZombieCleo asked him to finish the other side of the rainbow in exchange for deducting two million armor stands from his debt. JoeHills deliberately built the other side of the rainbow wider so the two sides would not match up, then bargained with ZombieCleo for another deduction of three million armor stands in return for him properly fixing the rainbow, bringing his debt down to one million armor stands.

JoeHills, ZombieCleo, and StressMonster101 participated in the Hedge Games as a team. Originally called Team Clills, they became CLeojoestressss [sic] when Stressmonster101 joined. They won second place after Rendog and Grian.
Halloween
JoeHills and ZombieCleo collaborated on a Halloween-themed area adjacent to Joerassic Bark, centered around a pumpkin patch, a corn maze (made using ferns), and a large model of Slimer from the television series The Real Ghostbusters. He also decorated the peninsula around his nether portal with black and orange blocks.
JoeHills attempted to use MumboJumbo's Spookification Chamber by paying with 16 golden apples instead of 16 diamonds, giving him a Halloween skin that appears to be his default skin with his face stretched horizontally around three sides of his head. He also participated in Stressmonster's Haunted House and completed a successful trick challenge at the Trick or Treat House.

Livestreams
JoeHills records most of his episode content during his livestreams, effectively making his streams a backstage access to the production of his videos. He multistreams to YouTube, Twitch, and Periscope, and streamed to Mixer until June 2020. He is not a Twitch affiliate, because the contract would forbid him from multistreaming.
While not recording, he tracks donations by expanding his face camera with each $20 milestone ($50 on special occasions), reducing its "Joepacity," a portmanteau of "Joe" and "Opacity," as it enlarges, which is called the "Jhost," a portmanteau of "Joe" and "Ghost." Upon reaching 0% Joepacity, he becomes the "Beetlejhost," a portmanteau of "Beetlejuice" and "Jhost," donning a Beetlejuice costume jacket and hue-shifting his face camera to make his skin appear blue, and the size and Joepacity go back to default. According to JoeHills, all face camera modifications reset at 6:00am "Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania time" (Eastern Standard Time), a reference to the film Groundhog Day, and this reset occurs on stream when he is actively streaming at that time.
Each livestream begins with a line of text that reads "Setting up stream now!", and this text does not disappear until he records a video segment or until somebody asks in a livestream chat whether the stream is set up, and upon the latter happening, he plays one of two differently-styled recordings of his song "When Will My Stream Begin," a parody of "When Will My Life Begin" from the movie Tangled, written by himself and recorded by his brother Sean Hills. The text has remained on the screen for as long as two hours on some livestreams.
Trivia
- The "TSD" in JoeHillsTSD stands for "Team Snow Day", which was a collaboration of web designers between JoeHills, Art Frederick, and C.P. Stanford. Together, they made comics, games, and videos before he started his YouTube channel.
- JoeHills's main Minecraft account is named "joehillssays" and his camera account is named "joehillssees."
- JoeHills was the first non-founding member to join Hermitcraft.
- JoeHills officially became a full-time content creator on July 1, 2020. He previously worked full-time as a LAMP stack web developer, which he is continuing as a freelance contractor.
- JoeHills uses his Patreon sponsorships to waive mid-roll and pre-roll ads on his videos, and often ends his videos by reciting his poetry or giving a poetry prompt for his viewers.
- JoeHills writes music, a mix of original compositions and parodies, some of which are Hermitcraft-themed, which are performed by his brother Sean Hills. They have released two albums: Sean Hills Sings Joe Hills and Sean Hills Sings Joe Hills II: The Secret of the Views.
- JoeHills has a bachelor's degree in history from Vanderbilt University.
- JoeHills was a cadet in Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at Vanderbilt with the intention to join the United States Marine Corps after graduation, but he was rejected from the corps after developing a serious digestive disorder.[3]
- JoeHills is an avid player of Dungeons & Dragons, and several of his Hermitcraft builds are locations from D&D modules.
