Hermitcraft Trading Card Game (abbreviated as Hermitcraft TCG) is a server-wide minigame in season 9 and 10 created by VintageBeef, and later sold as physical merchandise. All cards including those made between seasons were transferred to season 10.[1]
The gameplay is comparable to the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the goal is to collect a deck to battle other Hermits.
Cards[]
In game, the cards are map art created by VintageBeef, with a few Hermits helping via donation of materials.[citation needed] Cards were obtained by purchasing booster packs — retextured bundles appearing as foil packs — or by recycling 10 empty packs for the chance of getting one rare card. The TCG tokens required to purchase booster packs were mainly acquired by playing TCG matches officiated by a Game Master.

Resulting Game Changes | VintageBeef created maps that depict the HP value from 300 down to 10 for easier tracking of active and AFK Hermits current HP.
BURN and eventually POISON condition was changed from permanent effect card to a permanent status effect when played. Playing field was changed from Floor to Wall. Deck drawing mechanism was changed to provide room for a larger deck and more even randomization. VintageBeef worked with Xisumavoid to add a plug-in on Hermitcraft that would allow him to add "Lore" to each card. "Lore" would allow the player to hover their cursor over the card in their inventory and read the details of the Rare cards effect move and the effect cards. |
VintageBeef's Season 9: Episode 42 | vs | |
---|---|---|
Summary | Both players began with decks created by VintageBeef. Each deck had 9 Hermit cards, 16 item cards, and 17 effect cards.
ZombieCleo's deck consisted of Builder and Terraform type Hermits. JoeHills' deck consisted of Farm and Redstone type Hermits. Each player drew 7 cards from the deck to start the game. VintageBeef drew 3 cards from each player's deck and placed them in the reward dispenser. ZombieCleo started with playing rare GeminiTay. JoeHills started with playing common MumboJumbo. JoeHills made common MumboJumbo with BURN effect AFK with 170HP and played common TangoTek. AFK Common MumboJumbo with BURN effect prompted a discussion about how to display status effect on AFK Hermits. ZombieCleo made rare GeminiTay AFK with 50HP and played common BdoubleO100. ZombieCleo knocked out JoeHills' common TangoTek using common BdoubleO100. ZombieCleo drew 1 card from the prize box. JoeHills played rare Iskall85. ZombieCleo plays a Golden Apple to heal rare GeminiTay to 150HP, made common BdoubleO100 AFK with 130HP and played rare GeminiTay. ZombieCleo gets lucky with multiple defense effect cards and item cards. JoeHills is unlucky and draws many Hermits but no item cards to use attacks. Play testing with defense cards prompted a discussion about the balance of defense cards. It was clear that defense cards were OP. JoeHills (and ZombieCleo) realized later in the match that the win condition wasn't to knock out all active and AFK Hermits, but rather to win all 3 prize cards. Had JoeHills realized this earlier, he may have opted to save common TangoTek and play one of his full HP AFK Hermits. JoeHills' AFK common MumboJumbo continues to take 20HP damage every turn. JoeHills played a totem of undying on common MumboJumbo for its eventual doom. JoeHills plays the Chorus Fruit effect card to make rare Iskall85 AFK with 10HP and played common Xisumavoid. ZombieCleo made rare GeminiTay AFK with 60HP and played common GoodTimesWithScar. ZombieCleo is amused by her end of turn draw because of her luck and JoeHills' misfortune. JoeHills commented that he would opt to have fewer Hermit cards in his deck and have more effect or item cards. JoeHills made common Xisumavoid AFK with 160HP and played common Docm77. JoeHills' common MumboJumbo is knocked out by BURN but is saved by its totem with 10HP. JoeHills made common Docm77 AFK with 50HP and played rare Docm77. JoeHills is able to use the move World Eater, but JoeHills flips tails which halves the attack. ZombieCleo made common GoodTimesWithScar AFK with 170HP and played rare PearlescentMoon. JoeHills heals Iskall85 to 40HP using instant health effect card. ZombieCleo knocks out AFK MumboJumbo by using a crossbow effect card and drew 1 card from prize box. ZombieCleo poisons JoeHills' rare Docm77. JoeHills made rare Docm77 with POISON effect AFK with 50HP and played common ImpulseSV. ZombieCleo made rare PearlescentMoon AFK with 60HP and played common Welsknight. JoeHills heals all of his Hermits 20HP using splash potion of healing. ZombieCleo made common Welsknight AFK with 80HP and played rare GoodTimesWithScar. JoeHills made common ImpulseSV AFK with 40HP and played rare Docm77 and removes POISON status effect using a milk bucket effect. JoeHills then proceeds to draw a water bucket which prompts the quote of the match, "Everything's coming up buckets this turn." -@JoeHills ZombieCleo knocked-out JoeHills' rare Docm77 using rare GoodTimesWithScar. ZombieCleo drew 1 card from prize box. ZombieCleo won the short game (3 prize cards). | |

Resulting Game Changes | Discussion about a turn order reminder prompted VintageBeef to add name tagged armor stands next to the playing field with turn order instructions.
The wall playing field proved to be an improvement over the floor playing field, but play testing revealed that swapping up to 12 cards during an active/AFK Hermit swap could be cumbersome. VintageBeef made a change to the game so that 5 (instead of 6) total Hermits could be played at one time and they all exist where the AFK Hermits were played. VintageBeef eliminated the special Active Hermit position on the board. In a later episode, Beef would work with Etho to make a redstone mechanism to toggle the active Hermit on the board. A working prototype was made, but was fairly complex and may not fit into the aesthetics Beef was looking for. For the time being, Beef is choosing to rotate the map to indicate the active Hermit. VintageBeef made two heads that can be used to indicate BURN and POISON status effects. VintageBeef mentioned during the match that he needs to find a way to differentiate between Permanent and one-time use effect cards. VintageBeef made changes to the defense cards by reducing the damage prevented or making them one time use. VintageBeef made changes to the status effect healing cards (water and milk buckets) so that they can also prevent the status effect from occurring. VintageBeef worked with Xisumavoid to make custom item card art for each card type using the /trigger CustomModelData command. VintageBeef is considering making a turn order change so that if the player swaps the active Hermit with an AFK Hermit, the new active Hermit would be disallowed to attack. |
